SHORT STORIES

MOONFISH.jpg

Image by Myriam Zilles from Pixabay

What this story is about

It’s never wise to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Especially when the moon is full . . . There are things one just should not do at such a time. Go for a walk in the woods for example . . .

As Jonathan finds out.

It’s a warm summer’s evening. A perfect time for a stroll in the woods. Wrong. Oh, so, so wrong! That's the time when moonfish rise and flies buzz and different realities come to pass . . .

How this story came to be written

Moonfish was in its draft form originally written as a radio play. It was never aired as such. I have always had a warm place in my heart for this story. So I decided to rewrite it as short story and offer it as a freebie in the hope that others will enjoy its hair-raising air of mystery and suspense.

A Whiff of Something Else.jpg

What this story is about

It was a day like any other day. Except for the smell. That was something else. It took them by the nose. Many people followed the scent and went to find out where it would take them. They never came back.

Only two people lived to tell the tale.  Except they never would . . .

How this story came to be written

Tell you the truth? I don’t really know. I just followed my nose and found out where the story went. The beginning was there. At first I didn’t know if it was going to be dark & scary or light & airy. As I got further along the way I began to have a vague suspicion of how it would end. Dark. And scary!

The Waiting Hour.jpg

What this story is about

It was the thirteenth hour. The waiting hour. And he was waiting. Oh yes. It was both an urge and a compulsion. Except . . . patience is a virtue and not everything comes to he who waits. Well, not everything one expects that is. As Rufus finds out!

Wait with him and share his bizarre adventure.

How this story came to be written

The Waiting Hour started out as a single first line without a follow up. I felt there was a story there, waiting to be written. It had an incubation time of about two years, though. It was sitting in my subconscious, popping up from time to time without doing much of anything. When I had finished The Garden Path it was suddenly there. It didn’t take me long to get my protagonist on the path of his bizarre adventure. Which has a surprising end (for me too, I must admit).

‘I just read The Waiting Hour . . . It's really good. I like its odd, quirky tone and the use of language. Also, to narrate a story almost purely through dialogue is a real feat - and I thought their conversations were very fresh, immediate and beguiling. It pulls the reader in and takes them along with the narrative at a good fast jig. Well done.’

Forty Winks But One.jpg

What this story is about

A broken heart, a befuddled brain, a con man with his eye on the money and a chance meeting on a bench in the park. It’s not a healthy combination. Certainly not for one’s bank accounts. However, when the alcoholic fog lifts and the full extent of the disaster hits, the protagonist’s faculties rise to the challenge of designing a fitting come-uppance. Read the story and find out how it all plays out.

How this story came to be written

Like with most of my short stories Forty Winks But One started out as a title that intrigued me but with no idea what the story would be behind it. I had finished the first chapter of my sixth novel, when I decided that I would take a break and do another short story. I woke up one night with the opening lines in my brain. The rest just followed more or less seamlessly when I sat down to write the sequence of events. It turned out to be a quirky story of deceit and come-uppance. It made me smile in places. I hope you enjoy it too!

Whistling at the Moon.jpg

What this story is about

He had been hearing it for a while now. A sound that seeped into his consciousness. A sound that could not be heard by human ears. When he found out what it was all about he was not a happy bunny. To put it mildly. For once in his life he faced a silent majority that was so dead set against his plans it would do anything to stop him.

Which it did. It was a once in a life time experience!

How this story came to be written

The title of this story came to me first, as per usual. It intrigued me. I had heard about wolves howling at the moon but this was different. It was the whistling that threw me. For the life of me I could not fathom what that was about. It felt ominous. It set the tone of the story. Then I found out that in certain cultures whistling at night was ill-advised. It could call up all kinds of unwanted creatures. That opened up all kinds of possibilities and out came this story! Hope you enjoy it!

The Wink of Summer.jpg

What this story is about

It was a summer no one remembered. For the simple reason that it winked out of existence and back in when it was all done and dusted. In more ways than one! Spring had done its usual clean and Summer wasn’t particularly happy about where that left her. When the dust had settled all over her abode she decided on her own course of action. With some very unforeseen consequences!

How this story came to be written

As per usual the title of this story came to me first. I batted it about a few rounds until the opening line occurred. Rain was pouring down and I really wanted summer to come and visit my garden.

Summer? Visit? Yes, there she was, the main character of my story. A presence with a mind of her own.

Have fun reading her story!

A FOOLISH MYSTERY.jpg

What this story is about

The morning was full of whispers. They woke him up. They niggled their way into his consciousness. They kindled what he told himself was an unhealthy interest. An active curiosity. For which he berated himself. Why on earth should he be bothered?! He’d given up on the mysteries of life, hadn’t he? It turns out he could not let it go. He finds out why.

How this story came to be written

The working title of this story was Parking Zone. It stayed that way for a while but it did nothing for me. I could not figure out why it had appealed to me at all. It was a mystery. But something was definitely parked somewhere. It was when the story started whispering to me in my sleep that it started to unfold. With it came the character whose story it is.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE.jpg

What this story is about

When his eyes cracked open, he found himself on the floor. With the odd feeling that he had been tipped out. Normally he would have dismissed it as fanciful and gone back to bed. Except. Except this was not a normal morning. As he soon finds out.rth should he be bothered?! He’d given up on the mysteries of life, hadn’t he? It turns out he could not let it go. He finds out why.

How this story came to be written

When I have finished a chapter on the novel I am writing, I look around for something to write a short story about. Apparently I was not quite done with the character whose adventure featured in A Foolish Mystery. Looks like he returned to his old foolish ways. Some people will never learn!

Before and After the Light.jpg

What this story is about

Before and After the Light is a quirky short story. Sometimes memory can play unexpected tricks. Especially when triggered by something in the present. Then a door opens to a past hidden so deep it seems to have never happened. The main character drops through a hole in his consciousness to make a trip down a forgotten memory lane.

How this story came to be written

The title to this story came to me first. It intrigued me no end. As I was wondering what could actually have happened before or after the light, the story started writing itself. I did not have a clue where it was going or how it would end. I just followed along and let myself be surprised.

Something in my Pocket.jpg

What this story is about

Have you ever rummaged through your pockets and come across something that you definitely didn’t put there yourself? Well, it happens to the main character of this short story. It leads him to a series of quite unexpected adventures.

How this story came to be written

I was talking to friends. In the conversation the phrase ‘something in one’s pocket’ came up. Except at the time ‘something’ was filled in. I said it sounded like a good title for a short story. However, afterwards I couldn’t for the life of me remember what the ‘something’ was. Apparently someone had mentioned ‘having her grandfather in her pocket’. But that wasn’t it. I thought about it for a while but eventually I stuck with ‘something’.
