What the book is about

Out running for reasons of her own Jorna narrowly misses being hit by a drunk driver. A blind boy is not so lucky. The driver deliberately swerves and knocks him flying into a canal. This unleashes a cold killing rage. Jorna dives into the canal and saves the boy from drowning.

Afterwards she is assailed by cruel memories of similar acts of disrespect perpetrated against her. It brings her to the brink of insanity. Only her staunch refusal to give in to fear and despair keeps her from tipping over the edge. Her descent into hell comes to a surprising end when she discovers she is not the only one with demons to battle.

How the book came to be written

Demons is a story about toxic relationships. The subject matter was triggered by something I witnessed.

I was very fond of two aunts of mine on my mother's side of the family. They ran a business together and I stayed with them a lot in my childhood.

When one of them got married, they had to pack in the business. This left the other aunt rather at a loose end. In those days to be married was the done thing. So she started looking for a man and soon after she too got married.

During the years that followed I saw my aunt change from an independent business woman who made her own decisions into a zombie. There were lots of things she was not allowed to do. Her husband's word was law and, as the marriage vows dictated, she honoured and obeyed. Her family advised her time and again to leave him. To which she invariably replied 'I love him'.

Even when eventually he questioned her sanity and  committed her to a psychiatric home for geriatric patients.

I always wondered about the inside of such a relationship. The how and the why. That's where Demons came from.
